My Productive Daily Routine (Pandemic & Unemployed Edition)

Since the corona-virus pandemic hit, I’ve gone crazy and back about twenty times so far. Ultimately, I’ve kind of gotten used to staying home and I low key don’t miss working. Recently though, the state of Maryland has began the reopening process after being on lock down since mid-March.

Before the world opens back up completely I thought I’d just share what my productive daily routine looked like while self-quarantining. If you like something from my routine feel free to incorporate it into yours.

Wake Up Bright & Early

Most days I’m up by 6 or 8am. It can be so tempting to want to sleep in every day but honestly, I wake up in a better mood when I’m up early. I don’t have to rush, I can sit down and enjoy my breakfast, and by noon, most of my daily tasks are already complete.

Once I start working again, it will be much easier to fall back into my daily work routine since I’m already adjusted to waking up early. Boo-yah!

*Quick Tip: Don’t reach for your phone as soon as you wake up, you’ll just end up laying in bed for hours, just scrolling. Instead, opt for making your bed as soon as you get up, eating breakfast, showering, getting dressed for the day, and then check your phone.

Those notifications and news reports can wait!

Get Hot & Physical

Stretch, yoga, meditate, namaste.

I never imagined I would become a yogi. Doing yoga wasn’t something I ever planned to do especially since I’m not very flexible and still can’t do the splits. But, I tried it once and just fell in love. Yoga is very relaxing but also energizing.

I started off doing a 30-day yoga movement challenge for beginners and guided meditations with ‘Yoga With Kassandra’ on YouTube.

After a yoga session, and/or a light workout, I check my Libra horoscope for the day. It’s scary how on point they can be. I’m currently using the Daily Horoscope App . For a faith-booster, I read a daily devotional on Our Daily Bread.

Exercise My Brain

I been having a lot of fun over on Duolingo, challenging myself and others while learning new languages. I took Spanish in high school, and had a couple Spanish lessons at my local community college and it’s been nice to brush up on my skills again.

Other languages I’m currently learning are: Portuguese, French, and German. I think it’s very beneficial to at least know “the basics” in different languages, especially if you plan to travel internationally.

Do you have a Duolingo account? Or are you a native speaker in any of these languages? please let me know.

I also like to read for at least 30 minutes to an hour each day. I recently finished reading Deepak Chopra’s “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” book and I ordered a bunch of other new books I can’t wait to read- stay tuned for a mini book haul.

Listening to music is an every day, all day thing for me. My music taste is very diverse but R&B (Rhythm & Blues) is my number one favorite genre. Also, I like to do word search puzzles and I journal at least 2x weekly. I’ve really been into podcasts lately so some of my favorite podcasts are:

Therapy For Black Girls

Angela Yee’s Lip Service

The Introverts Guide To

By midday, I’m usually eating lunch, going for a walk, a drive, or running any errands that I need to. I feel like my summer 2020 activities will mostly involve being out in nature- hiking and going to the beach.

Connect & Network

During these times, it’s important to still stay connected with your family and friends (the non-toxic ones), especially our elderly family members who can’t get out the house as much, or at all. A quick phone call or text will do. I also utilize social media a lot for this.

If you haven’t made a linkedin account by now, you are missig out. In my opinion, it is the best networking platform to meet potential employers, mentors, and recruiters.

These days, it’s all about who you know so I’m always on there connecting with new people and learning new skills through their Premium learning portal.

*Fun Fact: I got my last job through LinkedIn. A recruiter saw my resume, thought I would be a great fit, and she reached out to me. I didn’t even apply for the job. Do I really need to convince you any further?

Netflix & Chill

After all my daily tasks are complete, I kick back and relax for the rest of the evening if I don’t have any other plans. No more checking and responding to emails. I make sure to dedicate quality self-care time to myself every day.

It’s okay to set boundaries. You don’t have to be available to everyone at every minute of the day just because they’re family or friends.

Don’t be afraid to say “no”. Let them know that you don’t want to be bothered right now and if they truly care, they should be able to understand without getting upset.

Also at this time, I like to take a nice hot bubble bath, light some candles, slather on some cocoa butter, make a drink, pop some popcorn, and Netflix ‘n’ chill the night away.

Log Out

30 minutes to an hour before bed, I try to log out of all my social medias for the day and set my phone to ‘Do Not Disturb’ until the morning.

Let me be honest, I just can’t hang like I used to. Going to sleep at a decent time isn’t hard for me. As a teenager, I could probably stay up for 24 to 48 hours straight and still be a ball of energy the next day. Nowadays, I’m in bed around 10:00 pm.

To help me fall asleep- I’ll read a book or a magazine (Essence is my favorite), listen to something soothing like ‘rain sounds’ on Apple Music or find a movie to fall asleep on.

Am I the only person who tries to find the most boring movie that I know will make me sleepy?

So, that pretty much sums up what my daily routine has looked like. How have you been staying productive? any good TV shows or movie recommendations? any good reads lately? I would love to know.

Till next time,
