4 Benefits of Journaling

Journaling is defined as to keep a daily record, as of occuring experiences, or observations. It’s self examining, reflective entries concerning your private thoughts and feelings (Meah, A).

In one of my favorite movies– ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, the main character Benjamin, played by Brad Pitt kept a journal documenting his entire life story (which was quite interesting to say the least). His love interest- Daisy, finds his journal and undercovers secrets never told, wild adventures and so much more.

Spoiler alert – Benjamin ends up getting Alzheimers and no longer remembers the life he once lived. This leads me to my first benefit of journaling:

  1. Journaling can help improve your memory

Have you ever been at a family gathering or out with friends and someone starts telling a story with: “Hey, remember when..”, and it makes you say: “Ahh yes, I remember that!”. Then all the emotions from that experience come rushing back and you start to feel a wave of nostalgia as the story goes on? that’s what journaling feels like.

Sometimes it can bring back both good and bad emotions. I’ll read through my old journals and find myself laughing, crying, and cringing. God forbid, if I was to lose my memory, I would want to have my journals to read back on.

2. Journaling can hold you accountable on your goals

In addition to writing regular journal entries, journals can be used to write down goals for the year, daily to-do lists, manifestation scripting, and gratitude writing. If you never followed through on that idea you had your journal will certainly remind you. At some point, you’ll get tired of writing and wishing for the same thing over and over and you’ll actually start to make shit happen.

3. Journaling is a great healing release

Journaling is the most cost-effective therapist. When you can’t always talk to someone about how you feel, you can vent it all out on paper. I promise you will feel better – even if just a little bit. If you plan to write some pretty detailed secrets that you don’t want anyone to know, you might want to be mindful of where you store your journals.

I’ve had one of my journals from elementary school read by mom and I was devastated. Long story short, my mom or no one else has ever invaded my privacy again cause they understand how important my journals are to me, they respect my privacy and I love them for it.

4. Journaling is self-reflective

As you journal, you can see the areas in your life that you need to improve on in your love life, career, family, friends, etc. You’ll realize all your patterns, your toxic traits (yes, you can actually be the toxic one sometimes), who needs to be removed from your life and who’s actually good for you and your mental health.
